One question we frequently get asked is what size of rug do I need?   There is no short answer, so much depends on the size and shape of your room, personal preference and what room the rug is going in.
We’ll break it down for you with some handy tips ahead.

Living Room
The first option would be to have the front legs of your furniture resting on the area rug. This works especially well if your sofa is backed up against a wall.

The next option would be to place only your coffee table on your area rug and have the remaining pieces of furniture frame the area rug. This is a popular option but may leave your room looking small if it is a larger space.

Dining Room
The main thing to consider in the dining room is the size of your dining set. Most designers would agree you want the rug to fit completely under your dining furniture when the chairs are pulled away from the table. Large dining tables that sit 6 – 8 people would require a 9 x 12 area rug, while smaller dining tables could utilize a 6 x 8.

Bedroom

In your bedroom you have a few different options for rug placement.  You could simply place a runner on each side of the bed. This is a great choice if your room is small or your furniture layout is asymmetrical.  Make sure to choose a runner that does not extend past the length of your bed.

The next and most popular option is to have two thirds of your bed on the rug. In this layout the rug starts just a little ahead of your nightstands and extends beyond the foot of the bed. The area of rug showing should be at least 18 inches and up to 24”. A rule of thumb would be an 8 x 10 rug for a queen bed and a 9 x 12 for a king.

The last option would be to have your bed and night stands entirely on the rug. Ideally you should leave 18-24” of rug around the outer edges of your furniture.
